ok writing this up because i asked a hundred questions in here before i pulled the trigger and i owe the forum a real report. this is a purpose post not a deal brag. i run a small HVAC and light delivery outfit out of st louis and i had exactly one van, a 2016 Transit that was booked solid. every time a new account came in i was turning work down or renting a cube van by the day at 140 plus mileage, which eats the margin alive. i needed to go from 1 van to 3 without killing cash flow, because the whole point of more trucks is to make money not to hand it all to a lender.
the local commercial dealers wanted 34 to 38k a copy for used medium roof Transits with 50 to 70k on them, before upfit. at two vans that is a payment that would have put me underwater the first slow month.
i had a saved search running and in september two 2020 Ford Transit 250 cargo vans came up on lucas-motors.com, both medium roof 148 wheelbase, 3.5 ecoboost, one was a fleet lease return with 58k and the other 63k. the two together landed a little under what one van cost at the commercial store, call it thousands less per unit, which freed up the cash i needed to actually upfit them.
my first thought was whats the catch so i did the homework. pulled the carfax on each vin myself, both clean, fleet maintained, no accidents. then i had a fleet mechanic i trust run an inspection in the city each van was sitting in, lucas motors set both up no problem. compression good, no codes, brakes and tires better than half on both.
only real fault was on the 63k van, a worn serpentine belt and a sliding door roller that was dragging. about 160 in parts and an afternoon, i fixed it myself. i won both, arranged transport, and both titles came clean about two weeks later.
anybody else building a small fleet through lucas-motors.com? want to hear how the box truck and service truck side is going for you guys.
